These children from Knowle Park Congregational Chapel at Keighley have just arrived at their destination on a pre-war summer evening trip.

If the year was 1937 they are at Golden Acre Park, Leeds; if 1939, at Sunnyvale, Hipperholme.

Such excursions were an annual event, and could involve a convoy of buses, as seen here.

Thanks to meticulous records kept by the chapel secretary, we know that in 1937 some 83 Sunday School scholars under 16 travelled free; 28 senior scholars and teachers each paid 1s 9d, and 49 adult friends 2s 3d.

Between them they had already bought 1,334 Amusement Tickets to spend on the boats and rides at Golden Acre, where they joined another 600 evening trippers from another five Congregational Sunday Schools. The photograph was taken by newsagent and chapel treasurer James Dewhirst – a canny move as he could then sell prints from his Oakworth Road shop.
