South Craven householders are being offered cut-price compost bins – but will have to organise their own collection.

Charging for disposing of garden waste was agreed by Craven Council last month and will start in July, when a £24 charge will run until March, 2015.

Residents not willing to agree to the charge are now being offered the chance to buy one of a limited number of compost bins, at the reduced rate of £9, instead of £34.95.

But, bins will have to be collected on one of three Wednesdays – June 5,12 or 19 – between 8am and midday from the council’s Engine Shed Lane depot. Bins will also have to be pre-ordered and paid for in advance.

In addition, because the council expects there to be high demand, bins will be restricted to one per household, and those wishing to take up the offer will have to produce proof they live in Craven.
