Oakworth gala will be held on Saturday, July 6. Hopefully there will be entries from all groups and businesses in the village. It would be particularly good if there were more entries in the fancy dress category as numbers for this have been dwindling over recent years. Anyone wishing to hold a stall on the gala field or for information, contact Janet on 642625.

Work has started on the new play area in Holden Park and will hopefully be finished in six weeks. When it is complete, there will be a grand opening event on Sunday June 30. The next task for the group will be to raise money to create a games area on the old tennis courts, so if you have any fundraising ideas, let one of the committee know. We also hope to put in place an exercise trail and assault course in the woods and at the top end of the park. Obviously, all this costs a lot of money, so please donate whenever you can. Fundraising events planned so far are a ceilidh and a Gardeners Question Time. More details will be available later.

Slack Lane Baptist Church are holding their Anniversary Services on Sunday, 3pm and 6pm with Rev Michael Jackson from Leeds. The Colne Ladies Choir led by Mr Ken Brooke will also be singing.

Oakworth Ladies Group host The Ritardandos at Oakworth Methodist Church on Friday, June 7, 7.30pm. Admission is £4 per person to include refreshments and a raffle ticket. Proceeds will go to the Meningitis Trust and the church funds.

Oakworth Village Society meet on Tuesday, June 11, 8pm, at which the new gala queen will be crowned. This is a meeting for all the residents of Oakworth to forward your ideas and/or any problems you have noticed in the village.

Saturday: Breakfast with God for four to 11-year-olds and families at St Mary’s Church, 9.30am-10.30am, followed by craft activities, songs, games and prayers for the children.

Sunday: This is the first Sunday after Trinity. There will be a “Book of Common Prayer” service of Holy Communion at St Mary’s at 8.30am and a service of Parish Communion at 10am as the Reverend Nigel Wright will be licensed as priest in charge of the Parish of Oxenhope by the archdeacon of Craven, the Venerable Paul Slater.

The Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association’s next meeting is on Thursday June 6. Chris Mitchell will deliver a talk on behalf of Kisiizi Crafts, which supports orphans and training nurses in Uganda. SUTTON Sutton WI welcomed Anne Thompson, who gave an illustrated talk on Florence Nightingale. The next meeting is on June 10 at 7.15pm in the community centre. Visitors and new members are all welcome.

Coffee morning at the community centre on Saturday 10am to 11.30am. This is in aid of the Mothers Union. Coffee will cost £1, and there will be a book stall, raffle and cake sale.

THWAITES BROW/LONG LEE/PARKWOOD There is bingo on Tuesdays at the Dickie Bird pub, 8.30pm and a quiz on Wednesdays, 9pm. Sunday lunch from 12.30pm. First Sunday in the month, breakfast 10-noon. The charity bottle at the Dickie Bird has been opened and counted. The sum of £575.58p was raised. This will be presented to a representative from Barnardo’s on Tuesday night before the start of the bingo.

On Sunday July 21, the committee at the Village Hall are once again organising an Open Gardens and Scarecrow competition. The one held last year proved very popular, so it is hoped that there will be more entries this year. Any gardens can be entered, they can be just looked at over the garden wall or if larger, open. Last time the scarecrows had a Diamond Jubilee theme. This year, it can be any subject. If you wish to enter, call June on 210722 or e-mail longlee villagehall@gmail.com. The morning service of Holy Communion at Long Lee Methodist Chapel on Sunday was led by the Reverend Nevill Richardson. As it was Trinity Sunday, this was the theme for the service and was reflected in the choice of hymns, Bible readings (by Adrian Moore) and prayers. In his sermon the minister, spoke about The Trinity and how to understand it, we had to go back to the beginning of time and try to understand how things have evolved since then.

The Reverend Jonathan Pritchard was the celebrant at the sung Parish Communion at St Barnabas Parish Church on Trinity Sunday. Readers were Margaret Anstey, Carl Pybus and Jill Dodsworth who also administered the chalice. Rod Ticker preached on how the teaching of the Trinity helped us to understand the power and stability of God. Intercessions were led by Billy Clayton and organist was Edna Huggett. Helen Salt and her helpers led the Fun Church and developed their theme in readings, songs and various activities. Music on keyboard was provided by Jill Dodsworth. Sandie Exley-Watts, 10.30am.
