A street got together yesterday to raise money for Help for Heroes.

Residents of Thornhill Avenue in Oakworth were joined by family and friends for the event, which coined in £534.

The street party included a barbecue, raffle, stand-up bingo, games and quizzes.

Organiser Ian McLaren said: “It was really well supported, we had 80 or 90 people there, and the amount raised exceeded all my expectations. It was a brilliant day.

“We had a lot of donated prizes – every business I approached contributed something – and I would like to say a big thank you to everybody for their support.”

He paid special tribute to young neighbour Beth Russell, who made promotional posters and sold raffle tickets, Heidi Lobley who helped with the organising and did face painting and Karl Rowlett, a chef at the Grouse Inn, Oldfield, for providing the barbecue.

“It was a real community effort by everyone in the street,” added Mr McLaren.
