'Speed was a factor in death crash' - police
6:00am Wednesday 18th September 2013 in News
Early inquiries by detectives suggest that “high speed” was a factor in the collision and that no other vehicle had been involved at the time.
Police held an official press conference yesterday afternoon at the scene of the tragedy.
Airedale and North Bradford Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Angela Williams, said all three who were killed had come from Denholme and added: “This will really have wrecked the community and upset them. All our thoughts are going out to the families of the three.”
Chief Supt Williams said a team of detectives were piecing together what had happened, looking at CCTV and evidence from skid marks left on the road.
She said: “Initial inquiries by detectives suggest high speed was involved, we don't believe any other vehicle was involved.
“It’s still unclear exactly what happened but we are not looking for any other vehicle.”
She also said she was not aware of the vehicle that crashed having been previously known to police.
Anyone who saw the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution in the Thornton Road area or around the village before the collision should phone police on 101.
Police markings on Thornton Road began about 100 yards before the left turn into Kipping Lane.
Groups of young people arrived at the scene in the morning, comforting each other with some leaving bouquets.
One read “I’ll miss you lots”, another said “You’ll never be forgotten” while another said: “Keep riding bikes up there.”
By the afternoon, grieving family members were bringing their own floral tributes, hugging each other in tears. Relatives, too distraught to speak, had asked to be left alone.
One card to the 19-year-old read: “My gorgeous baby sister. I will miss you forever” and “We love you and always miss you - All your Denholme girlies”.
Other cards read: “Will miss you like mad. You will always be like the brother I never had”, “We are devastated you have gone”, “A large void has been created”.
