Volunteers plan to set up a food co-operative in Keighley

Volunteers plan to set up a food co-operative selling fruit and vegetables at low prices from Keighley community centres.
They will begin with stalls at Highfield Community Centre and Keighley Asian Women and Children's Centre in Lawkholme. The Highfield Food Co-op is being set up with a £1,500 grant from the Community First fund for Keighley Central ward.
Community development worker Jo Horrox, who co-ordinates the fund, said the project was in its early stages.
She said: “It's about making fresh fruit and vegetables available to local people at affordable prices. They’re going to source it locally or from Bradford wholesalers.”
Community First is funded by the government, but committees of local people decide which groups should receive money in each area.
The fund for Keighley Central ward covers an area including Highfield, Lawkholme, Beechliffe, Utley, Showfield and Knowle Park. Jo encouraged groups or individual residents to get in touch if they had an idea for something that could benefit from the fund.
