Fears blocked drains could lead to flooding on a road between Haworth and Oxenhope

Blocked drains could lead to flooding on a road between Haworth and Oxenhope if they are not cleared soon, a ward councillor has warned.
Councillor Rebecca Poulsen said she and her two Worth Valley colleagues were concerned about weeds clogging up drains in Hebden Road.
She added: “The drainage along the side of the road is completely overgrown.
“It was put in place to prevent flooding but it has not been maintained. My ward colleagues and I are urgently raising this issue with the council.”
Coun Poulsen said the problem was apparent along a substantial stretch of the road, but was particularly bad opposite a property called Hawkcliffe Farm.
“I noticed it while driving around – the drains are actually fairly new but they’re already blocked by these big weeds,” she added.
“We need these drains cleared before we start getting heavy rain. It’s always more cost-effective to sort this type of thing out in advance rather than wait until it becomes a serious problem.”
Julian Jackson, assistant director for planning transportation and highways, said a council gully team was due to be in the Hebden Road area and would work on clearing the blocked gullies.
He added: “Due to cuts to budgets, we had to extend the time between scheduled gully cleaning, but where we are aware of a specific problem, we will always try to fix it.”
