Late try foils Keighley comeback

Old Brodleians showed their intent from the off, moving the ball wide at every opportunity in this SSE Yorkshire Division One match.

Initially the Keighley defence was up to the task. However, the pressure told when a good forward drive gave scrum half Joe Armitage the chance to cross wide out.

Although Keighley fought hard, they were outgunned up front, and eventually good linking between forwards and backs gave Old Brods winger Matt Hoyle a run into the corner, Keighley replying with a penalty from centre Ben Blackwell.

Brods added to the scoreline with a penalty from Hoyle. Near the end of the half, Keighley, with Stuart Inman and Leigh Sugden leading the forwards and Danny McGee controlling things in the backs, began to make inroads into Brods territory, their efforts being rewarded with another penalty form Blackwell.

Playing down the slope in the second half, Keighley began well, but a slick Brods counter-attack gave Armitage his second try, converted by Hoyle.

To make matters worse, a galloping run through the middle led to a try for Brods' New Zealand centre Sam Deacon.

Keighley, with nothing to lose, threw everything they had into the game, and it paid off when wing- forward Tom Lowther swooped on a handling error to score, Blackwell converting.

The Keighley forwards began to gain the ascendancy in the loose. Driving their way downfield, they were rewarded with a second try for Lowther, Blackwell adding the extras.

With time running out, Keighley were forced to chase the game, but unfortunately for them a loose pass was intercepted by Brods hooker James Brown, who finished the match with an unopposed race to the line.
