Keighley MP’s Despatch Box debut housing hope

Keighley MP Kris Hopkins has told the Commons the government’s Help to Buy scheme is providing a massive boost for first-time buyers.
In his debut at the Despatch Box following his appointment as housing minister, he said the government was committed to supporting people’s aspirations in the housing market.
“In just six months, our Help to Buy scheme has helped more than 15,000 households reserve a new home for themselves and their families,” he added. “The scheme is proving extremely popular.”
Mr Hopkins (left) cautioned against speculation Help to Buy would fuel a nationwide housing bubble.
“At the moment, there is a huge media focus on London and the South-East,” he said.
“As a northern MP, I know if we remove London and the South-East from the national figure of 3.8 per cent for price rises, we get 2.1 per cent for our part of the country. Several other parts have seen no increase at all.”
