Laycock WI had a strong attendance at the last meeting when members were treated to a slice of the Great British Bake Off as Mike Armstrong, Sainsbury’s master baker, presided over them in Paul Hollywood style as they were instructed in the art of making stollen. We worked out our frustrations as we pummelled and kneaded the dough, and as we waited for our masterpieces to prove, Mike filled us in with what he had been doing since his last visit. He gave a brief history of the stollen, which originated in Dresden, Germany, and is fast overtaking the traditional Christmas cake as a festive treat. As we anxiously waited for our efforts to cook, Barbara congratulated the quiz team for their efforts in the recent WI area competition and nominations for the Christmas charity were discussed. Menu choices were requested for the Christmas meal at Amici’s and volunteers requested to contribute desserts for the Christmas party in November. After we retrieved the finished product from the overworked ovens and appraised our efforts, Jane Allen gave a vote of thanks to Mike for a very enjoyable and enlightening evening. Competition winners were: 1st Jane Allen, 2nd Brenda Atkins and 3rd Jennifer Woodward. Next month is the Christmas party and members were reminded to bring presents for the secret Santa.
