Volunteers are being sought for an innovative project to support Keighley’s elderly and disabled through the winter months.

The £10,000 scheme will involve clearing snow, carrying out home repairs and helping people get to the shops and essential appointments.

The Winter Warm Good Neigh-bours Project is being run jointly by Keighley Volunteer Centre and Keighley Community Transport.

The two long-established organisations will co-ordinate existing services and introduce new ones.

Volunteers will clear snow on paths and driveways so clients are less likely to injure themselves by falling.

There will be a co-ordinated minibus service so people can reach local shops, and volunteer car drivers will take clients to important health care appointments.

The Volunteer Centre’s existing handyman scheme will be extended to carry out essential repairs and adaptations in people’s homes.

Volunteer Centre manager Gary Pedley said: “The Winter Warm project aims to support vulnerable older people and people with disabilities to maintain their safety and independence during severe weather conditions.

“With the support of volunteers from the local community, we will co-ordinate services that provide practical assistance to local residents.”
