Firefighters turned out to the scene of an horrific ‘crash’ at Keighley Campus Leeds City College.

But there was no cause for panic. A crew carried out an exercise demonstrating how casualties are cut free from the wreckage of cars involved in accidents.

More than 80 students took part in the initiative, staged as part of activities to mark Road Safety Week.

Some Oakbank School students also attended the event (pictured).

Council road safety officers, police and an A&E consultant were present to talk about their roles, and there were personal testimonies from people whose lives had been affected by road accidents.

Becky Collier, student liaison officer at the college, said: “The road safety team was really impressed with the group of students who attended the hard-hitting session. The room was totally silent as the students watched a presentation and heard the real-life testimonials.”

Tom Rhodes, Bradford district fire service prevention manager, said: “We fully support the campaign.”
