A carer overdosed on her elderly mother’s anti-depressants, an inquest in Bradford heard on Friday.

Karen Fry, 60, who lived with her mother in a flat at Hainworth Lane, Keighley, was found unresponsive in bed by her mother on September 11 this year.

The Bradford inquest heard how Mrs Fry, who had a history of mental health issues, had given up her job to look after her mother, and had been in a low mood before taking to her bed.

She had recently been to see her GP and asked for a repeat prescription for her mother. She had also been waiting for a follow-up appointment for herself with the community psychiatric nurse and been promised a care co-ordinator to help with her mother, which had not happened.

The month before Mrs Fry had been found collapsed from an overdose on a hotel room floor during a few days’ break from caring.

She had been admitted to Airedale Hospital before being discharged into the care of the mental health team, the inquest heard.

A statement read out on behalf of her son, Max Fry, said he had always been concerned about his mother. It added: “It’s not come as a complete shock to me.”

Assistant Bradford coroner Mary Burke recorded a verdict that Mrs Fry – who had left a note for family – had taken her own life.

After the inquest, Mrs Fry’s daughter, Emma Merta, said: “Mum was not a selfish woman doing what she did. It wasn’t because she was struggling to cope with being a carer. She would help anyone. You could not find a less selfish woman anywhere – I think that was half her downfall.”
