Councillors have approved an updated assessment of the Keighley Town Centre Conservation Area.

Keighley Area Committee – part of Bradford Council – last week adopted the revised report on historic town buildings.

The conservation area includes much of North Street, where there are many Edwardian and Victorian buildings, and sites around Keighley Shared Church.

Properties on several of the streets – including North Street and High Street – are being renovated with money from the £2.7 million Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI).

Owners can receive part-funding from the lottery and Bradford Council-funded THI to help return the buildings to their Edwardian and Victorian glory.

The conservation area, last assessed in 2007, had to be reviewed as a condition of receiving the THI grant scheme.

The reassessment decides which town buildings should be protected and what types of development are allowed.

The process sparked controversy earlier this year when councillors claimed Keighley was like ‘living in a museum’.

There was a demand for economic regeneration over preserving historic buildings.
