It is sad to hear an OAP – Colin North – was assaulted in Riddlesden – Pensioner is attacked on walk home (Keighley News, November 21).
Mr North is known to many of us as an inoffensive man, who has a good word for all and likes to stop for a chat whenever possible.
It is a pity these thugs, if ever brought to justice, will never be adequately punished for this crime, as our do-gooders in the EU will not permit it. Bring in the birch for this type of offence – a short, effective, low-cost punishment that proved its worth in the Isle Of Man until it was abolished in the mid-70s, much against the outcry of islanders to retain it.
My sympathy and good wishes go out to Colin, and hope to see you around soon.
Councillor Ron Beale Riddlesden and Stockbridge ward
