Work has been promised this week to solve a major problem affecting street lighting in Silsden.

Dozens of street lamps have been knocked out due to the malfunction with a fuse at one of the town’s electricity substations.

Workers from Northern Powergrid were this week attempting to make repairs.

The problem was highlighted by district councillor Andrew Mallinson, who in recent weeks has reported more than 30 streetlamps not working.

He was responding to complaints from residents at a recent neighbourhood forum about problems in the Bolton Road, Briggate and Bridge Street area.

Coun Mallinson, who represents Craven Ward on Bradford Council, said both pedestrians and car users were being put at risk.

He added: “The area around the Co-op has been turned into a black wilderness and a hazard for those out at night.”

Coun Mallinson said at the neighbourhood forum, residents reported some streets were in total darkness and action was needed before any accidents occurred.

He added: “I have reported these faulty lights to Bradford Council after doing a walk around the ward on an evening.

“Many of them have been repaired but not all of them, and more and more are failing at an unacceptable rate.”

Coun Mallinson said this week he was continuing to walk around the ward compiling a list of lights not working.

He encouraged residents to report faulty lights through the Bradford Council hotline number 01274 431000.

A Bradford Council spokesman told the Keighley News this week that Northern Powergrid had discovered a fuse in the substation had caused outages on local street lighting.

She added Northern Powergrid workers were this week attempting to solve the problem.
