A cycling film festival was one of the plans revealed during the latest meeting of a group set up to involve district residents in next year’s Tour de France celebrations.

The idea was outlined at a meeting of Worth the Tour, which was staged at Keighley Campus Leeds City College on Monday.

Alan Watkinson, of Keighley Film Club, said the festival should take place during the Grand Depart weekend of July 5 and 6.

Worth the Tour spokesman, Gerry Crookes, from Oxenhope, added: “It will hopefully take place in the evening after the roads re-open, and would be held at Keighley Picture House.

“There would be nine films – on themes identified as competitive sport, childhood dreams, family, leisure, comedy, travel, ambition, inspiration and endurance. Organisers have applied for funding and are waiting to hear back.”

Gerry said the meeting had been very constructive, and that the Worth the Tour gatherings were attracting more support and interest each month.

The Monday meeting also included a presentation about how the Grand Depart is likely to affect public bus services. This was delivered by transport authority Metro representative, Neil Stewart.

Also present was Councillor Graham Mitchell, representing Keighley Town Council’s watch and transport committee and the Keighley Bus Museum Trust.

Commenting after the meeting, he said: “I’m very glad we’ve got the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, as it’s very clear it’s going to be the only corridor of transport up the Worth Valley.

“In my councillor role I’m trying to attend as many Tour de France meetings as I can to keep myself up to date on what public transport arrangements will be available.

“I accept a lot is still very fluid, as every meeting I go to I hear about some new group that wants to put on something for the Tour.”

Coun Mitchell said the neighbourhood of Showfield in Keighley will be particularly cut off on the day the Tour passes through the town. He noted all of Showfield’s exit roads lead onto the Skipton Road section of the race route.
