A Worth Valley ward councillor has asked Bradford Council if it will support a proposal to provide visible recognition of Haworth’s Fairtrade Village status.

Coun Russell Brown has submitted a written question to the district council’s leader, asking whether the council will back a recommendation to install signs recognising the Fairtrade accolade on roads leading into the village.

Bradford Council was due to hold its latest full meeting on Tuesday, and Coun Brown said he was expecting to receive a written response to his query.

He said: “It would be great to have these signs in place in time for the Tour de France. It’s about all trying to promote the village and getting more people to visit it.”

This autumn, members of Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury Parish Council agreed to support the signage plan, though acting chairman Coun Peter Hill said he did not think the parish council should pay for the project’s full cost.

Haworth became the world’s first Fairtrade Village 11 years ago. The status acknowledges its efforts to promote an ongoing campaign to ensure producers in developing countries get a fair price for their goods.
