A Keighley supermarket which hosted some of this year’s poppy appeal collectors has been officially thanked for its support.

Royal British Legion collectors were given £5,835 by customers at Asda earlier this year – more than the sums raised at any other local supermarket. The total raised by this year’s Keighley Royal British Legion poppy appeal was £34,334.

Legion committee member Alan Cooper presented a certificate of appreciation to members of staff at Keighley’s Asda on Tuesday morning.

The certificate will be displayed on the supermarket’s community noticeboard after Christmas.

Mr Cooper said: “The public at Asda have been brilliant, and the staff have been absolutely wonderful.”

He added he and 87-year-old Keighley veteran Peter Faulkner spent a fortnight collecting donations from the store’s customers for the 2013 appeal.

Store manager Paula Watson said: “It’s stunning our customers have raised this much money. This is a very worthy charity to support, and we want to thank all of our customers who donated.”
