Plans for a temporary community radio station are among suggestions for ways in which Keighley can celebrate the arrival of the Tour de France Grand Depart next July.

The idea was mooted at the latest meeting of Keighley Town Council’s events and leisure committee.

Committee chairman, Councillor Tony Wright, presented the details, explaining public information could also be relayed to visiting crowds via an internet ‘webcast’ and a town centre public address system.

Thousands of people from across the UK and further afield are expected to congregate in and around the town on July 6 to get the best possible view of the race.

Speaking after the meeting, Coun Wright said: “We anticipate people will stake out their patch several hours before the race is due, probably pitching on the pavements the night before.

“For those attending the event, there will be little information but plenty of confusion. Therefore, the plan would be to provide services informing these people where they can find food, drink and toilet facilities, as well as public transport and any other vital information.

“In addition, there would be commentary on the race, with details on whatever is currently happening, as well as background information.

“Keighley resident, Frank O’Dwyer, has agreed to do the race presentation, as he is a mine of useful information. We would also provide a compere for the build-up to the race to help put on a party atmosphere.”

Coun Wright added the community radio option could be made possible though a successful application for a 48-hour radio event licence.

Such an information service would not only assist people gathered in Keighley town centre, but would also benefit spectators in the Worth Valley and elsewhere in Airedale.

Coun Wright said the town council is investigating whether it can also book Victoria Hall for an evening Tour de France-related event, which would involve local schools.
