A two-storey cafe planned at Oxenhope railway station could create nine jobs.

The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (K&WVR) is seeking permission for the timber-clad building, to be constructed adjacent to the platform.

A planning application has been submitted to Bradford Council.

The new cafe would replace a current, cramped facility in an old railway carriage.

K&WVR chairman, Dr Matt Stroh, said: “We have been keen to develop a permanent cafe for the railway for decades, and it is what passengers want.

“The current facility seats about 30, but the new cafe would accommodate between 70 and 80 people and, importantly, upstairs there would be full sit-down meal provision to cater for visiting coach parties, which at present have to go elsewhere.”

The cafe would be manned by a mixture of full-time staff and volunteers.

Opening hours would predominantly match the railway’s operating times, but the facility may also be in use during special events, and could be offered to community groups when not needed by the K&WVR.

Sheffield-based agent TAD Architects said K&WVR had informally consulted the village parish council, and it supports the proposals in principle.
