A Riddlesden man who was still getting behind the wheel of his car when he clocked-up his 100th birthday last year has died.

Arthur Whitaker regularly drove his Seat Arosa to Keighley Golf Club – where he had been a member since 1957 – for social functions.

He attended a Friday lunch group, which celebrated his centenary with a special meal in his honour.

In his younger days, Mr Whitaker played off a handicap of 12, and he was house chairman at the club during the early 1980s. He continued to play into his 90s.

Club secretary, Andy Walker, said: “Arthur was a valued and popular member for many years, and we were extremely sorry and saddened to hear of his death. Our condolences go to his family.”

Mr Whitaker, who died at Airedale Hospital aged 101, was born in Earby and spent all his working life as an engineer, serving clients in the textile industry.

He began his career in a blacksmiths shop with Electrical Products Colne Ltd, where he was promoted to director.

He worked full-time until he was 69 – driving between 45,000 and 50,000 miles a year – then continued in part-time employment for Richard Craven Electricals in Dalton Lane, Keighley, until he was 76.

Mr Whitaker, who lived in Bradford Road, moved to Keighley in 1958 and met his late wife, Gwen, at a cafe in the town centre. He leaves two grandsons.

The funeral service was at St Luke’s Church in East Morton on Friday, and was followed by interment at Morton Cemetery.
