A business hub has been launched in Keighley to help young people get the skills they need to find work.

The scheme – which began at Keighley Young People’s Centre in Parkwood last Thursday – will offer opportunities and services, including skills development, employment, enterprise and recreation.

Young people from across Keighley attended the launch event, which featured several art and sporting activities.

Abina Dorgan-Smith – for Bradford Council’s youth service, which has helped set up the project – said: “About 30 young people have shown real initiative in developing the hub.

“It’s really exciting young people have the opportunity to set up a formal business like this.”

The venture has received financial backing from the Youth Opportunities Fund, and support from councillors and Keighley Area Committee.

And help has been provided by the Co-operative Enterprise Hub, which supports the creation of member-owned organisations. It has worked with young people at planning workshops and consultation events.

Spokesman, Michael Fairclough, said: “By working together, people can be powerful catalysts for change, capable of overcoming many of the challenges facing society, the environment and economy.

“Co-operation can be key to bringing about the changes people want to see in their communities.”

Sohail Remhan, 20, a director of the new initiative, said: “We invited young people from across Keighley and the surrounding area to the launch.

“It’s been a fantastic experience so far, and we want as many young people as possible to get involved.”

A council spokesman said the centre’s purpose is to benefit young people living in Keighley and its neighbouring areas. “The hub also plans to take an active role in representing their interests,” he added.

The Co-operative Enterprise Hub, in its work with the young people, has covered issues such as business and financial planning, governance, rights and responsibilities around membership, and procedures.
