A driver stopped on the A629 at Kildwick had been unaware his motor insurance had expired just hours before, Skipton magistrates heard.

Daniel Granger, 25, of Hebden Road in Haworth, was told by the police officer to produce his insurance documents later because he had insisted he was covered, and the officer was unable to check because the Motor Insurance Bureau had not opened for the day.

But Granger discovered his insurance had run out just six hours previously.

Granger, who admitted using a vehicle without insurance on October 22, told the court it had been a genuine mistake, he had re-insured his car immediately and he would keep a closer eye on his documents in future.

Magistrates told Granger they believed it had been a genuine mistake, but they had no option but to endorse his licence with six penalty points.

They did however, lower his fine to £100, and ordered him to pay a £20 victim surcharge, but with no court costs.
