School standards in Keighley and across Bradford district as a whole often come in for a bit of a caning.

With one or two exceptions, the latest SATs performance tables – published last month – did not make particularly pleasant reading. Harden Primary was revealed as a bright spot – one of the country’s 200 best performers.

But 16 per cent of the district’s primaries were failing to reach new, tougher minimum government standards.

How refreshing, then, to see education in Keighley reflected so well in the New Year’s Honours list. Clearly the CBEs awarded to Louise Smith, the former executive headteacher at Long Lee and Ingrow Primary Schools Federation, and Keighley-born Margaret Farrar, who has spent the past decade in senior posts with the national training agency for headteachers, are tremendous personal accolades, and our congratulations go to both women. These accolades help show there is indeed plenty Keighley can be proud of with regards to the schooling it provides our young people.
