Re the article ‘Tributes to care team’ (Keighley News, December 19). Firstly, my sympathy and admiration goes to Mr Whitaker. I am sole carer for my wife, Margaret, who has multiple system atrophy, a little-known disease that affects the whole body. I, too, do not want my wife to go into a home, but without the help of Haworth district nurses and, in particular, the carers from Allied Care, I could not manage. The nurses call regularly and come out at the drop of a hat.
The Allied Care team come to wash and toilet Margaret in a morning and hoist her into her chair, then the same at night and to put her to bed. The girls and boys are so nice and cheerful and professional – they cheer me up as well.
Mr Whitaker has had a double whammy. I know what emotional stress I am under – it must be a lot worse for him.
I have nothing but praise for the NHS.
There must be thousands of carers out there, but the help of such organisations like Carers Resource and Time Out are a great help.
