Finally, we have seen what has been expected from Keighley Town Council for some time now.

The precept tax that is added to council tax will soon be raised again, possibly making it double what it had been – ‘Council tax rise warning’ (Keighley News, December 19).

Some families might not notice the difference much, but to others struggling with household bills, this tax hike could make a real difference to how much they can spend.

And this will have a knock-on effect for shopkeepers too.

While local dissent has been strong, with a 1,500-plus petition and the investigative reporting and campaigning of the Cavetown group and support from our local MP for filming of public meetings, we have not seen much understanding from Labour politicians.

Labour councillor Jan Smithies did say KTC was, in her words, “empire-building”, and Steve Pullen was honest and robust in his debunking of a myth about Heritage Lottery Funds.

That was after an article in the ‘Capital of Airedale’ newsletter wrongly attributed the awarding of millions to regenerate North Street buildings to the council’s acquisition of the old police station.

Please can we see some condemnation from Labour sources for Keighley Town Council because the evidence that has been uncovered by Cavetown group shows this is local representation at its worst.

This is a chance to set the record straight.
