A learner driver has been handed a curfew and 12-month ban by Skipton magistrates after admitting driving while disqualified.

Glen Scott, 39, whose sentence also included fraud by giving a false name in order to insure his car, had never held a full driving licence, the court heard on Friday.

He was stopped by police, on October 21, carrying out a routine check on the A629 at Cononley Lane Ends when it was discovered he did not have a driving licence and was not insured to drive.

Scott, who had nine previous convictions for driving while disqualified, all in the 1990s, had failed to re-apply for his licence since a conviction in 1994.

He had tried to insure his vehicle under a different name, the court was told.

In mitigation, Mohammed Farooq said Scott did not know he had to take a driving test following his last conviction, and he had been very frank in his admissions to the police.

Mr Farooq confirmed Scott had only ever held a provisional licence and he had attempted to get insurance cover by using a different variation of his name.

Scott, of Parkinson Lane in Halifax, was given a 12-month community order together with a three-month curfew, from 7pm to 6am, and a 15-day low level activity programme.

He was also banned from driving for a year and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £60 victim surcharge.
