Annual charity sheepdog trials were a record-breaking success – despite appalling weather.

Torrential rain deterred some people from attending the New Year’s Day event, at Moor Lodge Farm in Oakworth.

But more than £3,540 was raised for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

“The conditions were unbelievably wet but the day still went really well,” said Carol Mellin, who hosts the event with her son Philip.

“Our previous best amount raised was £2,710, so we have beaten that by some distance.”

Forty-one dogs with their owners, from across the North, attended.

There was also an auction, which alone raised £1,142. It featured 80 lots and Jeremy Eaton, from Skipton auction mart, wielded the gavel.

And a raffle had more than 70 items on offer.

Mrs Mellin added: “I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who gave their support and helped on the day. It was a tremendous effort.

“Special mention should be made of Ernest Ellison, who helped sell raffle tickets, and Alan Fothergill, who went round getting donations.”

Nearly £25,000 has been coined in since the trials began supporting the air ambulance service a decade ago.

Competition results were: nursery – 1 Jim Scriven, of Elslack, with Meg, 74 points; 2 Jim Jackson, of Downham, with Gem, 68; 3 Jim Cropper, of Deerplay, with Ricky, 62; 4 Arthur Temple, of Holmrook, with Fay, 59; 5 Katy Cropper, of Shap, with Molly, 58; 6 Elaine Hill, of Oxenhope, with Bracken, 58. Novice – 1 Elaine Hill, with Tweed, 73; 2 Keith Salisbury, of Bolton Abbey, with Rob, 66; 3 Alison Salisbury, of Bolton Abbey, with Hemp, 62.
