A search has been launched for Yorkshire’s greatest icons – and several Keighley district legends and landmarks are already in the running.

People are being invited to vote for their favourite from a list of more than 300.

Included in the line-up is the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, together with the classic 1970 movie version of The Railway Children, shot on the five-mile line.

The Brontes feature prominently on the list, with Wuthering Heights, Top Withens and the famed sisters themselves all garnering votes.

Glusburn-born Oscar-winning screenwriter, Simon Beaufoy, is also featured, as are East Riddlesden Hall and Timothy Taylor brewery.

Adrian Braddy – editor of the Dalesman magazine, which is running the poll – said: “To celebrate 75 years of publishing, we thought it would be a nice idea to find the 75 greatest Yorkshire icons.

“It’s called God’s Own Country for a reason – there is probably no other British county with so many reasons to be proud.”
