Councillors wanting to save Haworth Central Park’s threatened toilet block were putting their case to a full meeting of Bradford Council on Tuesday night.

Gary Swallow and Nikki Carroll, of Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury Parish Council, said they intended to demonstrate the strength of feeling that exists behind the campaign to keep the facilities open.

The toilets in the award-winning park have been earmarked for closure as part of the district council’s efforts to save millions of pounds.

A total of 1,360 people have signed a petition calling for the toilets to be saved.

Coun Swallow said: “We, in the outlying reaches of Brad-ford Met, feel we’re being asked to bear more than our fair share of the cuts.

“In the summer, local families take their children to play in the park in safety. Where are these children and families going to go when they need to use the toilet if these facilities are closed?

“In addition to use of the park by local families, there is a large influx of tourists into our village.

“Haworth has in the past been described as ‘the jewel in the crown’ so far as tourism in Bradford Met is concerned.

“But you can’t have a ‘jewel in the crown’ without basic infrastructure.”
