A girl whose grandparents live in Keighley has been crowned Miss North Yorkshire Galaxy.

Laura Handy spent much of her time as a child with grandparents Ngaire and Kevin Parker in Exley Head.

Now living in Settle, 19-year-old Laura will, in March, compete for the title of Miss Galaxy UK.

Success would see her travel to the US to compete in the Miss Galaxy International Pageant in Orlando.

Laura, whose mother used to work at Wilsden Health Centre and Airedale Hospital, currently attends Settle College Sixth Form.

As part of her Miss Galaxy year, she has been raising money for the Christie Cancer Charity.

Laura said: “I started in pageants at the beginning of last year, after meeting Miss England Charlotte Homes, who encouraged me to give them a try.

“I got through to the finals of Miss Harrogate and Miss North West last year.

“As Miss North Yorkshire Galaxy, I have attended and judged pageants all over the UK, and also supported local charities.

“I volunteered with the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and was invited to attend a volunteers meeting in Harrogate, and was overwhelmed by the support.”

Laura will attend an interview on Saturday for the Miss Universe Great Britain finals, hoping to follow in the footsteps of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here contestant Amy Willerton.
