Tory MP Philip Davies – whose constituency includes Cullingworth and Denholme – has accused Labour and the Lib Dems of plotting to sabotage attempts to secure an EU referendum.

Mr Davies said voters were being denied the chance to have their say on Britain’s membership of the EU because of opposition “conniving”.

A law passing through Parliament would guarantee a referendum by the end of 2017.

Speaking in Commons Business Questions, Mr Davies, above, said: “I understand the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats are conniving together to prevent the EU Referendum Bill becoming law.

“If they are successful in blocking the Bill going through the House of Lords in this session, as they seek to intend, will the Leader of the House introduce a carry-over motion to allow the Bill to be taken over to the next session of Parliament?”
