Worth Valley councillors fear a decision has already been made about the future of a threatened children’s centre – while public consultation is still ongoing.

Treetops in Haworth is among several centres that face having their funding withdrawn as Bradford Council proposes sweeping cost-cutting measures.

Tory group leader, Councillor Glen Miller, who represents the Worth Valley ward, said he attended a recent public meeting in Haworth to discuss Treetops and was “very ill at ease” with some of what he heard.

“It felt distinctly like the decision to close Treetops children’s centre had already been taken despite us being only part way through the consultation period,” he added. “Many questions went unanswered.”

But Coun Ralph Berry, the council’s portfolio holder for children and young people’s services, refutes allegations any decisions have been taken.

“As I explained when I attended the very constructive consultation at Haworth, we are keen to be informed by the views of local parents and carers,” he said.

“As Coun Miller knows, I personally assured the meeting their ideas were of great interest and the proposals out for consultation are not definitive.”
