Sutton residents are being urged to pledge money to help buy a piece of open land for village use.
The parish council wants to buy the two-acre Alvic Field, off Holme Lane, which is due to go under the hammer at an auction in Leeds on Wednesday. Its bid to buy the land ahead of the auction was rejected, which means councillors will now have to bid at the sale itself.
District councillor and ward representative, Ken Hart, who will attend the auction with parish council chairman, Councillor Neil Whitaker, said they had been told there had been a lot of outside interest in the field.
And he said in order for it to be secured, the council would need more pledges of money, however small.
“We’ve had a few pledges already, but we could really do with some more if we are to be successful,” he added.
If the council succeeds in buying the land, it will consult on its future use.
The field is being sold by Auction House and has a guide price of £10,000.
Anyone interested in pledging money should contact the clerk, Denise Emmott, or any parish councillor.
