Petal power will inspire the Tour de France cyclists as they race through Silsden this summer.

Village churchgoers are making dozens of living tributes to the riders, as part of a flower festival with a difference.

Silsden Methodist Church members will use wooden cut-outs of a cyclist as bases to craft imaginative floral displays.

The cutouts are being given to individuals, families and groups from the church, as well as other local organisations who meet at the premises.

Church member William Jowitt has made the cutouts using specialist equipment at Keighley Fab Lab, where he is a volunteer.

Mr Jowitt said he had produced about 20 bases – each showing a bike and cyclist – in several sizes.

He added: “They will be displayed around the church like a flower festival. There will be a Christian theme to the displays.

“The display will probably be set up two weeks before the race. The intention is to have an opening ceremony.

“The church is already open four days a week for coffee and we’re looking to extend the opening times.”
