An Oxenhope couple are appealing for bikes for a canal ride in aid of Manorlands.

Karen Wadsworth and Maz Simmons hope to ride more than 130 miles along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal towpath in July. They plan to train on cheap second-hand bikes, but would prefer better cycles for the actual three-day ride.

The pair have not cycled before, although they are both keen walkers. Karen, the new community worker for Keighley West ward, has a son, Dan, and daughter, Lauren.

She said: “We’re going to be doing intense training but we need some bikes, either donated or someone to give us a good deal.

“We’re going to be in the saddle for three days. We’ll look like John Wayne when we finish!”

Karen and Maz decided to embark on the ride because of the way the hospice treated Karen’s parents, Mary and Peter Drake.

Karen said: “Both my parents passed away in Manorlands so it’s quite close to our hearts. The staff gave outstanding care.”

Karen and Maz are looking for sponsorship for their ride, and are organising a silent auction at the Bay Horse in Oxenhope this summer to raise money Anyone willing to help should contact Karen at karenwadsworth@hot mail.com, and donations can be made by visiting the just giving. com/maz-simmons website.
