Keighley’s latest credit union has been launched at Our Lady of Victories Primary School.

Parents can pay in money and apply for cut-price loans after dropping their children off on Monday mornings.

Credit unions are aimed at people on low incomes, and allow members to save money regularly or pay off low-interest loans each week.

A network of branches, run by Bradford District Credit Union, is being set up across Keighley.

Ward councillor, Jan Smithies, who is spearheading the local campaign, said the Our Lady Victories launch was a huge success, with about 16 adults – mostly mothers – going along.

She added: “They opened quite a few accounts – some opened as many as four, including some for their children.”

Coun Smithies said the Our Lady of Victories mothers appreciate the credit union will make it easy to save up money for their children’s needs.

A credit union is already running at Ingrow Primary School and a new branch opened this week at the Sue Belcher Centre in Bracken Bank.

Coun Smithies added: “What we’re still looking to do is open a branch in a shop premises in Keighley.”
