Keighley MP Kris Hopkins has reiterated his determination to give people the chance to take part in a referendum about membership of the European Union.

He spoke out after Labour and Liberal Democrat peers blocked legislation that would have guaranteed a vote by 2017.

Mr Hopkins had supported the European Union (Referendum) Bill as it passed through the Commons.

“Following failed attempts by opposition MPs to stop the bill’s passage in the Commons with delaying tactics, their friends in the House of Lords have done their dirty work for them,” he said.

“It is simply outrageous Labour and the Liberal Democrats wish to deny the British people the chance to have their say on this country’s future relationship with Europe, and we cannot let this rest.

“As a Conservative, I remain absolutely committed to ensuring an in-out referendum does take place.”
