Haworth Park could host a Tour de France “spectator hub” – including a giant television screen, stalls and live radio broadcasts – if a parish council’s application is successful.

Worth the Tour – a group set up to promote community involvement in the Tour’s Grand Depart – were told of the plans by Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury parish councillor Nikki Carroll.

Commenting at the well-attended gathering in Keighley on Monday, she said she and her colleagues hoped to have a response to their application later this month.

She added the parish council was ring-fencing some of its funding to support Tour de France-related community initiatives and was open to innovative ideas.

She said: “I’d really like to thank Liz Barker and the Worth the Tour team for all the work they have done so far in pulling everyone together for an event that will exceed everyone’s expectations.”

Anyone wanting to put forward initiatives to the parish council, or apply for funding, should e-mail clerk@haworthparishcouncil.gov.uk.

Monday’s meeting at University Academy Keighley also received details of Keighley Film Club’s planned Cycling for Life Exhibition, which takes place in Central Hall, Alice Street, on June 28.

Alan Watkinson, from the film club, said the event would invite exhibitors to display their wares and will also feature educational material and information relating to cycling.

He added: “The attraction of the world’s biggest sporting event, involving as it does communities along the route of Le Tour, has captivated enthusiasts. This will make Yorkshire the number one tourist destination at the beginning of July.

“We want to inspire those people who are interested in cycling – maybe because of all the excitement around Le Tour – but who’ve not even got one leg over a cycle yet!”
