A momentous period in history as it was chronicled in the Keighley News is being made available to study online.

Copies of the newspaper published during the First World War (1914-18) are being uploaded to the Internet. The information is being copied from microfiche, held at Keighley Library.

Free online access to all the editions will be provided.

The initiative is being spearheaded by Bradford’s libraries service as the countdown continues to the centenary of the start of the Great War.

Susan Hinchcliffe, Bradford Council’s executive member for employment, skill and culture, said: “All editions of the Keighley News, from between 1914 and 1918, will soon be available in digital form.

“Previously, these have only been available in libraries, limiting customers to scrolling through months of newspaper archives on microfilm.

“By working with a local expert and historian, we have been able to achieve the digitisation of more than 3,000 pages of the Keighley News covering the whole of the First World War period, in time for the important commemoration of 100 years of the start of the war this year.”

Pages will be available through bradford.gov.uk/libraries, in the local and family history section at First World War Resources.
