Keighley’s Jam on Top has become part of a lottery-funded project to train young people for jobs in the music industry.

It has become one of 100 ‘music hubs’ across the UK that will provide a wide range of opportunities for teenagers.

Jam on Top, in Dalton Lane, already houses rehearsal space for local bands, a recording studio and community radio station, Jam Radio.

As part of the project, it is now likely to create a space for young people to jam, create music and hold open mic sessions.

There could also be DJ workshops, as well as training in record production and other technological aspects of the music industry.

The music hubs are being created as part of the Big Music Project, run by UK Youth, a consortium of youth and music industry organisations.

The hubs, including Jam on Top, will provide free accredited training and recruit ‘music champions’, aged 16 to 24, to help run projects for other young people.

Several youngsters are already involved in the work of Jam on Top, either as musicians or volunteers with the radio station.

Brian Leach, who runs Jam on Top with his wife Tracy, said the Big Music Project offered an excellent opportunity for young musicians.

He added: “We can’t believe Jam has been chosen to be one of the national music hubs, but Keighley is full of talented musicians.

“We can offer ten young musicians the opportunity to create and run music-based learning opportunities and events.

“This can spread the opportunities to other young people to learn knowledge and skills.”
