Cowling Harlequins 22 Moorends A 6

With their pitch at Burgess Playing Field still under water Cowling Harlequins were given the use of Keighley’s Rose Cottage ground and they showed their gratitude by securing a Seventh Division win.

Moorends had dominated the previous meeting between the sides, but Harlequins were determined that wasn’t going to happen this time.

The Doncaster side started strong by catching the Harlequins out with a try by their full back after a chip and chase.

Harlequins responded well to the setback. Rob Haigh and Chris Young gave them impetus and they soon opened their account with a fine try.

Craig Nicholson collected the ball on halfway and ran to the line and Eddie Hall added the conversion.

There was no further scoring before the interval, but Harlequins had the momentum at the start of the second half.

They were completing their sets and creating pressure which led to Ross Pearson diving over from acting half to give his side the lead.

Moorends exerted heavy pressure but Harlequins held firm with Ben Pickles and Wayne Verity doing some great work.

Eventually the Harlequins worked their way up field and new signing Brady Godfrey, who had caused Moorend all kinds of problems all afternoon, placed a kick in to the goal area for Mitchell to dive on the loose ball for his first Cowling try. Brannan Lawn kicked the conversion.

Man of the Match Gary Nelson was not going to be denied a try. He had battered the Marauders in attack and defence.

With ten minutes to go he collected a pass off Godfrey and powered over the line for a try which was converted by Lawn.

Harlequins are proving that they aren’t jokers anymore and are serious contenders. They are due to play Selby A at home on Saturday.
