In response to Mr Horry’s concerns for safety at Merlin Top/Phoenix schools – ‘Fears for lives on busy street’ (Keighley News, February 6).

I agree something must be done to safeguard children’s safety. But I’m afraid a crossing will not suffice.

You see, there are no double lines outside the school, only zig-zag lines that say ‘school keep clear’ on one side of the road, with nothing on the side of the road where the derelict Timmy Taylors pub is.

Double yellow lines down both sides of the road is the answer and fine the motorists who abuse this.

I’m afraid most of the drivers who take their children up to the school cannot understand the law because they are a law unto themselves. This shows in their ability to drive.

Incidentally, speed bumps do not slow traffic down – all speed bumps do is damage your suspension. Chicanes are the way to go – they not only slow traffic down but also save your suspension, allowing you to stay alive because going over speed bumps cause a crack in some moving part on your car.

So, in retrospect, what Jan Smithies has released is spurious.

Regarding North Dean Avenue, this road is less than seven metres wide, so speed bumps are inappropriate by law. And anyone travelling on a bus if bumps were installed would not be able to sit down for being bounced off their seat, giving cause for compensation claims.

If Bradford’s highways department had any brains, it would take some of the two metre pavements away, thus widening the road, and then put chicanes in.

The back entrance to the school is owned by the council and is a dirt track, so Jan, as a councillor, could get the council to pave it over.
