A Cullingworth butcher has scooped more awards.

Ellisons entered ten of its best-selling products in a top regional meat trades contest – and won gold awards for all but two of them.

The annual BPEX north-east region Pork Products Excellence Awards in Harrogate attracted hundreds of entries from butchers and farm shops across the region.

“This was our best-ever performance and for eight of our ten entries to pick up gold awards was a real achievement,” said John Ellison, for the Halifax Road business.

“All the products can be bought in the shop on a daily basis – what we enter is exactly what we sell over the counter.”

He added: “Our continuing success in the meat industry awards arena reinforces our commitment to sourcing top-notch pork from Yorkshire pigs only. It’s our first competition success of 2014 but we’ll be going all out to win more as the year progresses.”

The gold winners were the firm’s small pork pie, Scotch egg, dry-cured bacon chop, thin and thick pork sausages, Toulouse-style pork sausage, Cumberland sausage and sausage roll, which was making its first appearance in a competition.

The two other Ellison entries – dry-cured back bacon and pork, apple and sage burger – both earned silver awards.

The business, run by Paul Ellison and sons John and Brendan, is a member of the national Butchers Q Guild.
