People power has won the day after Bradford Council’s ruling executive decided this week to backtrack on some of its controversial planned service cuts.

Campaigners who fought hard to prevent the public loos in Haworth’s Central Park going down the pan are understandably jubilant, after it was announced the block will not shut in a dramatic U(bend)-turn!

Their victory is one for common sense. An argument relatively new, state-of-the-art, well-used, award-winning toilets in the heart of a village that draws many thousands of tourists every year should close just did not seem to hold water.

There will also be a huge sigh of relief that, at least for the time being, children’s centres – including those in Haworth and Silsden – will retain their funding.

While campaigners should be congratulated, ruling councillors also deserve mention for having the bravery to change their thinking.

Public consultations attract a massive amount of scepticism from people who suspect decisions are already done and dusted. But this has proved people power really can make a difference.
