A young cancer sufferer is back home after undergoing an intensive three-week course of radiotherapy.

Little Callum Ingham finished his latest treatment at St James’ Hospital in Leeds on Friday. And his mum, Kim Ager, said he’d done remarkably well.

“He needed anti-sickness tablets but he’s pretty much had no side effects, and he’s coped surprisingly well,” she said.

“He is his usual self and playing with his computer games console!

“We go back to hospital for a follow-up this week and then see the consultant on March 7, but it will be about three months – when he has a scan – before we find out how successful the radiotherapy has been.”

Callum, eight, of Parkwood Rise in Keighley, was found to have neuroblastoma – an aggressive form of childhood cancer – last summer.

Surgeons removed the tumour and the youngster – a pupil at Parkwood Primary School, Keighley – underwent chemotherapy and initial radiotherapy.

But should the battle be unsuccessful – and there is an 80 per cent chance of relapse – the family will have to look abroad, to America or Germany, for life-saving treatments not available here on the NHS.

An appeal has been launched to raise the £500,000 needed, and the amount on Callum’s Just Giving website is close to £1,000. Donations, goodwill messages and offers of support have continued to flood in.

A fundraiser is being held at the Cavendish Hotel in Keighley from 1pm on Saturday.

And Callum’s aunt, Sarah Ingham, is having her head shaved during a special fun day at Keighley Salvation Army in High Street from 11am to 3pm on Tuesday.

Her 14-year-old daughter, Katie, a pupil at Oakbank School in Keighley, will have her hair dyed at the same event.

Attractions at the fun day will include a bouncy castle, face painting, balloon modelling and a guess-the-name-of-the-teddy competition. Refreshments will be available.
