A Haworth eco-group aims to plant poppy seeds around a village car park to commemorate the First World War.

Haw-Earth plans the poppies as part of a project to brighten up neglected land at the Weavers Hill car park.

Group founder and parish councillor, Ashna Yates, said Bradford Council was due to let members carry out planting on grass slopes between the car park’s three levels.

She said: “We had a meeting with Bradford Council and it is going to give us the land at Weavers Hill.

“It’s quite a mess now. I said if it gave us the land we could plant flowers and bulbs and fence it off. There’s a little waterfall in the corner that comes off the Brontë Falls. It’s worked its way down and looks really beautiful, but it’s a bit neglected.”

Coun Yates said work would begin at Weavers Hill as soon as Bradford Council gave official consent. Haw-Earth’s aim is to plant food, herbs and wildflowers in as many pieces of vacant land in Haworth as possible.

Coun Yates added: “We could do with more volunteers. Now that we’ve got land, we need people to dig and plant things.”

Anyone wishing to join is asked to go along to Haw-Earth’s next meeting, at 7pm, on March 10 in the Parkside Social Club in Butt Lane, Haworth.
