Rescue workers and airborne medics have been in action near Haworth – thankfully, on this occasion, as part of a training exercise.

Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team, which was later joined by Yorkshire Air Ambulance, held its annual Core Skills Training Day on the moors above the village.

Saturday’s morning session enabled members to refresh their knowledge of conducting searches, use of vehicles, stretcher handling and rope systems.

A rescue scenario in the afternoon involving a walking group was simulated in the valley downstream from Bronte Bridge.

This involved two walkers, who had slipped on steep ground above the stream, with one coming to rest on a tree, while the other landed in the water.

Following a successful extrication by Calder Valley Search and Rescue volunteers, the more serious ‘casualty’ was transferred to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance for a flight to hospital.

Search and rescue group deputy team leader Rob Freeman said: “It’s vital the team regularly trains in its core activities to ensure we’re always ready for the next callout.

“To be able to train with partner agencies – in this case Yorkshire Air Ambulance – is particularly important to ensure casualties receive the very best treatment.”

He added the successful day could not have happened without permission from Yorkshire Water and the Walshaw Estate to use the land around Bronte Falls.
