Many mourned the loss of the old Ponden Mill store near Stanbury when it closed its doors more than five years ago.

The premises had become popular not just with locals but with people from afar, who visited in their coachloads.

In the intervening period since 2008, the once-proud mill building has fallen into disrepair and become a sorry sight.

How refreshing, then, to see plans unveiled to bring the complex back to life, in the form of an outdoor pursuits centre.

There can be few locations better suited to such a use, with moorland and a water-activities facility right on the doorstep.

And traditionalists and historians will be gratified the fabric of the Grade II-listed building is being retained.

With a £1 million investment in the area and new jobs part of the equation, the plans will be followed with great interest.
